Hello, How can we help today?

Transporting Warehouse Storage Systems

Moving a warehouse is rarely simple, and the storage system can often be the trickiest part. Racking, shelving and mezzanine flooring are heavy, bulky and need careful handling. Here at Rackbuy we buy, and transport, used storage equipment, so here’s our approach to moving it safely.

Begin With a Survey

Before you even move anything, take a close look at what you have. Write down the make, type and layout of all your racking, the number of bays and any damage that you can see. Photos and a simple drawing make reassembly much easier, especially if the system is moving into a new space.

Dismantle in the Right Order

Dismantling should be planned, not rushed. Firstly empty the racking, then work your way through it in a logical sequence with trained people. Mezzanine floors need extra care, as the steelwork, decking, stairs and handrails need to come apart in the right order.

Good labelling can save hours at the other end:

  • Label every upright, beam and frame so that each part stays matched to its bay
  • Bag and tag bolts, clips and safety pins
  • Bundle beams and decking by size
  • Keep a record of where each item came from

Load & Secure for the Road

Stack parts flat, bundle or palletise them, and strap everything so nothing shifts during transport. Uprights and beams are heavy with sharp edges, so protect both the load and the vehicle. Choose a vehicle that’s suited to the length and the weight of the equipment and make sure loading follows safe practice.

Inspect Before Reuse

Used racking needs to be checked before it can go back into service. Look for any bent uprights, damaged beams and worn connectors and replace anything that’s not fit for purpose. UK guidance recommends regular inspection by a competent person, and reassembly is best left to experienced installers.

Plan the Logistics

A smooth move depends on the details at both ends:

  • Check access, including height restrictions, loading bays and turning space
  • Agree delivery times with site teams
  • Confirm who’s unloading and where the items will be stored
  • Have the right equipment, e.g. forklifts, ready
